Chapter 3-How to Sharpen and Smarten Your Baby or Toddler’s Mind

Part 5:The One Thing You Must Not Do

Back to Index

When I taught my first child to read, I saw results quickly. He recognised words at 1 year and started reading primary/elementary school books aloud around two and a half years. So, I assumed that my second child would follow the same path.  I started teaching him to read even earlier than his brother, but I wasn’t seeing results as quickly as I had seen with his elder brother.

However, eventually, he started recognising words. He started reading primary books aloud at around 4 years old.  Today, he reads as fluently and as quickly as his brother. They got to the same destination but took different lengths of time to get there.

Had my second child been my first, I may have been tempted to give up. And this is the one thing you must not do. Never give up on your child.

If you follow what we teach in Primary School Prep DIY, you will see results in your child’s reading, maths, and writing. But, it may take longer for your child to get there than another child. You will be tempted to give up, but you must never give up. You must be patient and keep teaching your child until you see results. Results will come.

Jenny experienced the same thing. Her first child learnt to read and do maths very quickly. As I said earlier, from the reports I get, she is at the top of her class and flying through primary school now. However, it took much longer for her brother to learn to read. I remember getting reports about her son not getting it like her sister did. Did she give up?

No, she didn’t because I was there. I was there to share my experience and explain that her son would get there. And that every child is different and that she just needed to persist. And sure enough, her son got there. Her son learnt to read and do maths well before primary school but didn’t do it as quickly as his sister did.  Don’t give up on your child.

I want to show you what I would have missed had I given up on my fifth child. We started teaching her to read when she was under 1 year old. Despite showing her material consistently for about a year we saw no results. We could see no evidence that she recognised the words we were showing her. My husband and I were really discouraged.

You see, it had been a long time since the experience with my second child. And results came quickly with my third and fourth children. So, I wasn’t used to what I was experiencing with my fifth child.  It was tempting to give up. It was tempting to doubt whether we were going to see results. However, we refused to give up on our daughter. We encouraged ourselves and remembered what we had experienced with our second child. And we eventually saw great results.

Watch the video below of my daughter reading adult material at 4 years old. And see the results we would have missed out on had we given up.

I hope you watched the video. Never give up on your child.

Now, when I think about my journey, I have noticed many lies about teaching your baby or toddler that many parents with children that age believe. If I had believed them, I would not have seen the same results today with my children. Next, I will share some of those lies so you can ensure you don’t believe any of them.
